Carl A. Grant Lecture Series Nominations
The School of Education and the Wisconsin Center for Education Research sponsor the Carl A. Grant Scholars Lecture Series. Grant, who joined the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 1972, serves as the Hoefs-Bascom Professor of Teacher Education. He has written about and worked with teachers and administrators throughout his career to improve the achievement and schooling experiences of minoritized students, and to develop knowledge and skills in multicultural social justice, culturally responsive curriculum development, and teaching. The goal of this lecture series is to enhance awareness of scholarship on these topics on and beyond our campus, and to promote scholarly interest and collaboration in multicultural education.
Nominations of scholars from all stages of the career continuum and all types of institutional affiliations are welcome. This includes scholars with university appointments as well as those working in think tanks, national associations, school districts, state education agencies, and foundations. Our focus is on excellence in all its varied forms.
Carl A. Grant Scholars engage in a variety of activities during their visit. The core expectation is that a Carl A. Grant Scholar give a colloquium for WCER, including a post-colloquium lunch discussion with a small group of interested colleagues. Most scholars also meet individually with WCER researchers. Beyond those expectations, the nominator/host customizes the scholar’s visit to fit the needs of multiple audiences. As host, you might ask the scholar to speak at a departmental seminar, visit a graduate or undergraduate class, comment on your research, or consider a research collaboration. Several scholars have also spoken to groups of Madison teachers or at campus-wide conferences. Most have met with graduate students, either in class or informally. We also expect the scholar to meet with the Director or Deputy Director of WCER in one of the planned sessions or separately, if appropriate. The Carl A. Grant lecture series can support these activities by helping secure space and paying for lunch or snacks for meetings involving larger numbers of people.
The length of stay should depend on the activities to be undertaken, although most visits typically last 2–3 days. The strength of the proposed activities is among the criteria used to evaluate proposals. Virtual visits generally will not be considered due to our commitment to students, but a hybrid approach will be considered.
Please note that hosting a scholar involves creating a comprehensive itinerary that includes a schedule for the scholar to meet with colleagues in their field, as well as with the nominator’s team and departmental students. Scholars’ expenses are reimbursed and an honorarium provided.
This program has been in existence since 1989, and WCER has hosted more than 145 scholars since then. The program was known as “Visiting Minority Scholars” until 2015, when it became “Carl A. Grant Lecture Series”.
